graphic match

A graphic match, also known as a match cut is a cut between two either two objects, spaces or compositions in which two objects are graphically matched. This often helps establish a powerful continuity of action by linking the two shots metaphorically.

below are some examples of graphic matches;

A Space Odyssey

This shows a bone being thrown up into the air and then gradually fades into a space craft object. This graphic match shows the change of evolution from the  prehistoric age through to modern days. The graphic match is used to emphasise the change in time.

PSYCHO 1960

Right after the murder of Marion, the camera shows blood pouring down the drain which then gradually fades into showing Marions eye. This gives the message that there is no life left in her and by showing a black hole, it represents emptiness and a passage to nowhere.
